SNK Gals' Fighters
SNK Gals' Fighters is a fighting game built entirely around female characters from the SNK universe, and one of the most charismatic titles in the whole Neo Geo Pocket Color library. The starting roster brings together Mai Shiranui, Yuri Sakazaki, Athena Asamiya, Nakoruru, Leona, and Whip, faces that otherwise fight in separate series and rarely share the same arena. Matches are one-on-one, controls stick to the tried-and-true two-button scheme paired with the precise joystick, and special moves are entered with classic motion sequences, so players already used to other SNK fighters don't have to relearn anything.
The game doesn't take itself seriously, and it turns that into a strength. A lighthearted story frames the tournament, and short, teasing exchanges between matches give the characters a personality they rarely get in their home series. The system also works with extra abilities the player can assign before a match, slightly adjusting their fighter's behavior, adding a light layer of preparation to otherwise straightforward combat. Visually, it's a very colorful, cleanly animated title; the characters have compressed proportions but expressive, easily distinguishable poses, and the music keeps a brisk, pop-flavored line that matches the overall tone.
The game came out when the console was already losing commercial steam, so it reached many players only retroactively, through emulation and collector interest. That's exactly what made it a cult item: it's regarded as one of the first larger attempts at a crossover made up solely of female characters, and it's often cited as a forerunner of later, similarly toned spin-offs. Today it delights mainly through those little extras outside the fighting, the humor and the mutual banter, and as a fighter it remains pleasantly accessible even for newcomers. Short rounds and a low barrier to entry also make it an ideal game for those moments when you only have a few minutes to spare.
