Notoriously the hardest NES game; a challenge for masochists.

There are games that will give you a hard time, and then there's Battletoads — a game that wants to break you. For an entire generation of NES players it became synonymous with pure, cunning, at times downright sadistic difficulty, and that's exactly why it lodged itself in memory more deeply than hundreds of more polished titles.

At first glance it's a classic beat 'em up in the style that was in vogue back then thanks to the success of the Ninja Turtles — three amphibian heroes, green skin, a lightly mutant vibe, and humor. But the studio Rare, then at the peak of its technical prowess, refused to be boring. Every level mixes in a different style of play: one moment you're pummeling enemies with fists that comically transform into giant hammers at the instant of impact, the next you're sliding down ropes, climbing walls, or fighting your way through a snake tunnel.

And then comes the Turbo Tunnel. The third level, a hoverbike race in which walls, holes, and obstacles loom up before you at ever-increasing speed. It's not a test of reflexes, it's a test of memory — you have to learn the exact placement of every barrier by heart, because a single mistake means instant death. Decades after its release, this level became an internet symbol of gaming frustration, a meme and a badge of honor all at once.

Two-player co-op paradoxically makes things worse. The friendly fire here is infamous: your partner can accidentally (or on purpose) drag you across the entire screen, quickly turning a friendly party into an argument on one couch. Many pairs never got past certain sections, and it's precisely these shared defeats that today rank among the platform's most fondly remembered experiences.

Battletoads is something of a paradox: a game most players never finished, and yet almost everyone knows it. Its technical inventiveness, animations, and cheeky personality made it a cult classic whose name, even decades later, is spoken with both a smile and a shudder.

Why play: If you want to experience the legendary NES difficulty firsthand and understand where half of gaming's frustration memes come from, Battletoads is a must — just brace your nerves.
