Nanostray 2
Nanostray 2 built on the successful debut of Shin'en Multimedia's series and expanded the vertical shoot 'em up concept with more polished graphics, more weapon types, and more varied environments. The player again progresses through a series of levels in a spaceship, destroying enemy formations, collecting firepower upgrades, and facing large bosses, while compared to the first game, sequences with different camera angles and more varied mechanics within individual missions were added, enlivening otherwise genre-traditional gameplay.
Technically, the sequel again demonstrated the Nintendo DS's ability to handle smooth 3D environments with numerous on-screen effects, complemented by more detailed textures and more refined lighting compared to the previous game. The lower touchscreen again served as a ship status overview and radar, while the musical accompaniment continued the tradition of electronic tracks that complemented the futuristic atmosphere of space battles and the industrial environments the player flies through.
Nanostray 2 was received as a successful and technically more advanced sequel, confirming that the Nintendo DS could host quality shoot 'em ups comparable to console or arcade representatives of the genre, and reviewers particularly praised the visual variety of the individual levels compared to the more uniform first game. For fans of classic vertical shooters, it remains a pleasant surprise today, showing how well the genre took hold on a handheld with limited hardware, and together with the first game it forms one of the most complete shmup experiences available on this console, one that can still be recommended today as a showcase of Shin'en's technical prowess.
