Fills in the missing chapter between the first and second installments; reveals Roxas's fate.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days filled in, on the Nintendo DS, the missing chapter between the first and second installments of the Kingdom Hearts series and revealed the fate of Roxas, a mysterious character connected to the main hero Sora. The player experiences almost a year of Roxas's everyday life in Organization XIII, a mysterious order of beings without hearts, and gradually discovers fragile friendships as well as the dark background of the entire organization, making the game an emotionally intense story about identity and loss that gives meaning to many hints from the rest of the series and explains the motivations of characters who elsewhere appear ambiguous.

The gameplay builds on the real-time action combat known from the series, adapted for the smaller screen and adding a new panel system, with which the player assembles equipment, spells, and abilities into a limited, puzzle-like space. This system forces the player to think about trade-offs between a character's power and flexibility and adds a strategic layer to otherwise straightforward combat, one that the player gradually improves with panels collected on individual missions. The game also offers cooperative multiplayer missions, in which players fight together as different members of the Organization and compete for the best results within individual tasks.

On release, the game earned praise for its elaborate and emotional story, which filled an important gap in the Kingdom Hearts saga, as well as for its boldness in experimenting with the combat system on limited hardware. Fans of the series still consider it one of the key episodes necessary to understand the overall story, even though it itself takes place outside the main numbered installments and was given a smaller, portable format on the Nintendo DS. 358/2 Days thus remains an example of a spin-off that became an integral and indispensable part of a larger whole, without which many later twists in the series would lack emotional weight.
