Waking Mars
Waking Mars is a gentle exploration platformer in which the player, as a trapped scientist, makes their way through a cave system beneath the surface of Mars, bringing its long-dead ecosystem back to life. The controls are entirely touch-based — the character jumps and glides in gravity lower than Earth's, while tapping plants lets the player harvest seeds, plant them in new spots, and watch how different species of plants and spores react to each other and spread further through the caves.
The game was released in 2012 by Tiger Style, a studio that had already made a name for itself with the earlier game Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, and just as with that game, the focus here was mainly on atmosphere and a calm pace rather than combat or time pressure. Instead of enemies, the player faces ecosystem puzzles — figuring out which plants need light, which feed on other organisms, and how to link their chain together so the biosphere sustains itself and opens a path forward. This approach made the game feel more like meditative gardening than action exploration, which was unusual for mobile in 2012.
The visual style combines dark cave shadows with the vivid colors of blooming flora, underscoring the contrast between dead rock and life coming back to it. The music and sound design likewise deepen the sense of loneliness and discovery on an alien planet, even in moments when the game gives the player no specific task and just lets them wander and watch the ecosystem develop on its own. At release, the game was well received by critics, who praised precisely the boldness of building an entire title around a nonviolent cultivation mechanic instead of combat.
Why play it: for players seeking a calm, contemplative mobile alternative to action titles who don't mind a slower pace, Waking Mars offers a unique experience of growing alien life.
