Smash Hit
Smash Hit is a fast-paced arcade game in which the player races down an endless tunnel full of glass obstacles — pendulums, prisms, grates, and rotating barriers — throwing metal balls at them with a single tap of the screen. A hit shatters the glass to pieces, a miss costs one of a limited supply of balls, and once they run out entirely, the run through the tunnel ends and the player starts again from the last saved checkpoint. The concept is trivial to explain, but the game gradually picks up pace and complicates the geometry of the obstacles enough that what starts as a simple "throwing game" ends up being a fairly demanding test of reflexes and trajectory judgment.
Smash Hit's charm rests mainly on its atmosphere: a cold, industrial aesthetic with neon accents, ambient electronic music, and the satisfying sound of shattering glass create a hypnotic experience that works almost like meditation in the form of an action game. Controls are purely touch-based — a single tap anywhere on the screen fires a ball toward the last point touched — and can be mastered within seconds, though mastering it well enough to clear the whole tunnel without a single mistake takes much longer.
The game from Swedish studio Mediocre was, in the middle of the decade, one of the titles that showed just how well a mobile device could work as a platform for a purely arcade experience free of distracting layers of menus, characters, and story. The base version is free with a limited number of checkpoints along the tunnel, while the full version, without limits and without ads, is bought as a one-time purchase — an honest, old-fashioned model with none of the aggressive monetization seen increasingly often on mobile today.
Why play it: Ideal for moments when you want a fast, visually clean arcade game with no ads and no pressure to spend on upgrades.
