A touch puzzle box — you turn, unlock, and zoom into mechanisms.

The Room builds the entire game around a single object – a mysterious wooden box full of locks, gears, and hidden compartments, which you explore purely through touch, finger by finger, without a single extra word of explanation. Dials turn with a circling gesture, panels slide with a drag, the view zooms in and out with an on-screen magnifying glass, and each solved mechanism reveals another layer of the box hidden inside the previous one. Hints come from a discreet clue system, so the game never leaves you completely stuck, but at the same time it's in no hurry – the pace is dictated by patient examination of the surface, not by a time limit or a score.

Fireproof Games released The Room in 2012 and showed that a touchscreen can be a better tool for puzzles than a mouse and keyboard – a twisting gesture with thumb and forefinger fits turning a dial more naturally than clicking a button. A dark, gothic atmosphere with a hint of occult investigation – letters from a mysterious Craftsman, ambient sounds of creaking wood, and subtle light effects filtering through cracks – gave what would otherwise be an abstract puzzle tension and a narrative framework without needing a single character on screen.

The success of The Room launched an entire series of sequels and influenced the genre of touch-based "escape box" games, which have since appeared in abundance on mobile app stores, though rarely with the same craftsmanship and atmosphere.

Why play it: A great choice for players who love tangible mechanical puzzles and want to see how well turning and unlocking things works using nothing but fingers on glass.
