Alto's Adventure
Alto's Adventure reduces the snowboarding arcade to its essentials – one finger on the screen, with which the player jumps, does flips, and lands on an endless descent through snowy hills, without needing to keep track of anything else. No combo systems or complex menus, just steady forward motion, changing weather from a sunny day to a storm and a nighttime aurora, and simple goals like chasing runaway llamas or collecting coins, which gradually unlock new characters, board upgrades, and new environments to descend through.
The Canadian studio Snowman released the game in 2015 and built it on a clear contrast to the free-to-play arcades common at the time, crowded with timers and purchases – Alto's Adventure offered a one-time payment, no aggressive monetization tricks, and an emphasis on visual and sound atmosphere instead of grinding and purchase offers. A silhouette visual style with dynamically changing lighting based on time of day, along with ambient music, gave the game a meditative, almost soothing quality, thanks to which it worked equally well as a short break or as a long, aimless descent.
The game became one of the examples of how minimalist design and thoughtful monetization can work better on mobile than the chase for the highest possible number of game mechanics, and together with the Alto's series it significantly inspired a number of similarly styled "endless" titles that appeared afterward, trying to offer a similarly calm experience without pressure on performance and score.
Why play it: For anyone who wants a calm, visually beautiful arcade for a few minutes a day without ads and purchase pressure.
