Smooth ninja action; one of the console's best titles.

A true ninja is recognised not by the quantity of moves, but by how smoothly they merge into one fluid dance of death — and Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master from 1993 is exactly such a dance. Sega's peak of the Shinobi series belongs to the absolute top tier of action titles on the whole Mega Drive and remains, years on, a textbook of what fast ninja action should look like.

What elevates the game is its exceptional fluidity. The hero Joe Musashi moves like he's oiled — he runs along walls, double jumps, slashes with the katana and throws shuriken with a precision that makes movement itself a joy. The controls respond instantly, so even more demanding passages feel fair, and every successful run brings a sense of perfect mastery.

The level design, moreover, superbly varies the pace so as not to let you catch your breath in monotony. Between classic platforming and combat passages appear brisk interludes — riding a galloping horse, surfing on waves or a forward sprint where reflexes are what matter. The game thus constantly offers something new and keeps you on edge from start to finish.

Visually and sonically it is a polished piece of work. The environments have style and atmosphere, the enemies and bosses are inventive and the soundtrack underscores the tension and action of every scene. Everything fits together so that the game feels like one focused, self-assured experience with no dead spots.

Shinobi III is to this day celebrated as one of the console's best action and platforming titles and as a dignified finale to its series. If you want to feel what it's like to be a real ninja master, this game gives you that feeling like few others.

Why play it: Exceptionally fluid ninja action with varied pacing and superb level design — one of the best action titles on the Mega Drive.
