TibiaME (Tibia Micro Edition) brought a scaled-down version of the popular MMORPG Tibia from German studio CipSoft to mobile phones, at a time when the very idea of a full-fledged online game on a button phone was almost exotic. The player created a character of one of the traditional Tibia vocations, moved through a simplified world map, hunted monsters, gathered items, and communicated with other players connected over the mobile network - it was one of the first truly persistent online RPGs available on Java. Players could form groups, trade on the market, and arrange joint hunts for stronger monsters, thanks to which the game functioned as a genuine shared world, albeit on a much smaller scale than its PC counterpart.
The game ran over a GPRS data connection, which in the middle of the decade was slow and expensive, so CipSoft had to design the game to minimize data transfer - the world was therefore simplified compared to the PC version, combat ran at a simpler, more turn-based pace, and the graphics relied on small, clearly readable sprites. Despite these limitations, TibiaME retained the key elements of the original: persistent character progression, trading between players, and the feeling of a shared world. The sound design was necessarily sparse, but simple melodies and sound effects helped evoke the atmosphere of a medieval fantasy world even on a small screen.
TibiaME is interesting today mainly as one of the first swallows of mobile MMO gaming, long before online RPGs on phones became commonplace. For those who remember it, it represents an era when players logged into a virtual world over a slow data connection during a bus ride or a school break, and still managed to build up a character, possessions, and relationships with other players across countries. Its existence still serves as a reminder of how long a journey mobile online gaming has taken since then.
Why play: For those who remember it and anyone interested in the history of mobile gaming who wants to experience one of the first swallows of mobile MMO gaming from before the era of smartphones.
