Ferrari GT: Evolution
Ferrari GT: Evolution was one of the titles with which Gameloft proved that even button phones could offer a credible racing experience built around a licensed brand. The game was built on Ferrari models and offered a career mode in which the player gradually unlocked further cars and tracks, ranging from city circuits to classic racing courses inspired by real-world circuits. Controls were adapted to the numeric keypad - acceleration, braking, and steering into corners worked via a few buttons, yet the developers still managed to achieve a decent sense of driving and speed given the capabilities of phones at the time. Part of the gameplay was also upgrading cars between races, which let the player gradually feel the growing power of their Ferrari and gave them motivation to keep climbing the career ladder.
Technically, this was one of the more attractive 3D titles of its time on Java and Symbian - three-dimensional car models, smooth environments, and decent frame rates made it a fine showcase of what Gameloft could squeeze out of the limited hardware of mid-decade mobile phones. The audio side was sparse, as was typical for games on this platform, but the engine sound and basic effects lent the game a fitting atmosphere of speed and tension while overtaking opponents. Various versions of the game existed for phones with different display capabilities and memory, which was common practice for major publishers in the era of a fragmented mobile device market.
At the time of release, it was one of the popular titles in mobile game stores, because the combination of the famous Ferrari brand and solid execution appealed to a broad audience of casual players who wanted to enjoy a sense of fast driving even without access to a console. Today the game reads as a typical representative of an era when publishers licensed car manufacturers for short but effective mobile titles intended more for brief play sessions than for long-term play. For fans of mobile gaming history, it's an interesting illustration of the transition from 2D to 3D graphics on phones, before the arrival of smartphones and touchscreens.
Why play it: For casual players craving a short but effective ride with the famous Ferrari brand, even without access to a console or a touchscreen.
