SimCity Metropolis

Budovatelská 2006 EA Mobile SimCity ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

A lightweight mobile version of SimCity; building a city on a feature phone's display.

SimCity Metropolis is a lightweight mobile spin-off of the legendary city-building series, which EA Mobile adapted in 2006 for the displays and keypads of Java and Symbian phones of the time. The core idea stayed the same as in the computer SimCity - the player founds a city, builds residential, commercial and industrial zones, handles infrastructure, and monitors residents' satisfaction - just in a substantially simplified and lightened form.

Controls via the numeric keypad replaced the mouse: arrow keys moved the cursor across the city grid, number keys served as quick shortcuts for individual building types, and a confirm button placed the structure. The map and the number of managed variables were significantly smaller compared to the computer original, which made the game accessible even for short breaks, say on the bus. Even so, it kept the basic loop of city development, budget, and gradually unlocking new buildings, so the player felt a genuine sense of building progress even on a small display with a limited color palette. The gradual unlocking of new building types also gave the game meaningful progression even without an extensive tutorial, which mattered on a feature phone with no mouse-driven hints.

It was a paid game distributed through carrier and Java stores, without ads or microtransactions, as was usual at the time. Today the title is unavailable - the portals vanished along with the decline of feature phones on the market, and the only way back is through an archive or Java ME emulation.

Why play it: For fans of city-building games who want to see how SimCity fit into a pocket even before the arrival of smartphones - today practically only as an emulated memory.
