Abandoned the time limit and bet on free-form task completion in open levels.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 dropped the time limit of previous Game Boy Advance entries and instead built its gameplay around freely completing tasks directly within open levels, similar to the console version. The player moves between characters who hand out a variety of challenges – from collecting items through technical tasks to big jumps – and can complete them in any order and at their own pace, giving the game a more relaxed, exploratory feel compared to earlier entries in the series. A new stat system and gradual character progression in turn motivated players to return to previously visited locations with improved skills and unlock goals that weren't reachable on the first pass.

The handheld version was again handled by Vicarious Visions, which successfully adapted the game systems and levels to work on the small GBA screen while preserving smooth movement and precise trick control. The visual style remained faithful to the isometric perspective of previous entries, complemented by more detailed environments, and the game again offered multiplayer modes via link cable. The soundtrack carried the series' characteristic punk-rock atmosphere, adapted to the handheld's audio capabilities. Clarity of the control scheme remained a priority, so even a new player quickly got the hang of trick combos.

The GBA entry was received as a worthy continuation of the successful series and confirmed that Vicarious Visions could carry more complex game concepts onto limited hardware without major compromises in gameplay. The more open mission structure foreshadowed the direction the series would later take on consoles toward a freer, open world. To this day, Pro Skater 4 on GBA is valued as one of the handheld's most technically accomplished skateboarding titles and a pleasant choice for players who want to experience the series' early era without reaching for a home console.
