Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2
Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 brought to the Game Boy Advance the exaggeratedly stylized boxing series from Midway, known for its arcade approach and caricatured boxer characters. The player picks from a colorful roster of fighters with their own special punches and style, matches play out quickly, and the emphasis is on combos, dodges, and using special abilities rather than realistic boxing simulation. The career mode leads the player through a series of fights against increasingly stronger opponents, and between fights the player can upgrade the fighter's stats and unlock additional characters, so despite its arcade nature the game offers a clearly readable sense of progression.
The handheld version simplified the console entries' 3D fights into a clearer, faster form suited to the GBA, while trying to preserve the characteristic humor and exaggerated character graphics for which the series was beloved. The controls rely on simple button combinations for quick and heavy punches as well as dodges, which makes the game accessible even to players with no experience with boxing games. The game also offered multiplayer fights via link cable. Exaggerated special attacks and character taunts gave the matches a comic-book atmosphere that set the series apart from more seriously toned competitors, and the short, intense fights also worked well for quick breaks between other activities.
Among sports titles on GBA, it was one of the few boxing games, and thanks to its arcade, entertaining approach it found an audience among players looking for quick, laid-back fun rather than simulation depth. The Ready 2 Rumble series never managed to reach mainstream popularity comparable to major sports brands, yet it kept loyal fans thanks to its style. Today, Round 2 on GBA is an interesting reminder of the arcade boxing genre, which was more an exception than the rule in the handheld era.
