The sixth entry in the tactical series and the first on GBA; it came out in Japan before the game released in the West.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade is the sixth installment of the legendary tactics series and also the first to arrive on the Game Boy Advance – it came out in Japan already in 2002, that is, earlier than the entry that Nintendo later translated for the Western market. The player takes control of the young prince Roy of the kingdom of Pherae, who, after his father's death, must face the expanding empire of Bern and its mysterious alliance with the dragon Idoun. The story continues the saga's older entries and features a vast map of the continent of Elibe, across which the heroes gradually fight their way toward the enemy's capital.

The gameplay sticks to the series' proven formula on turn-based maps, where each unit has its own movement, range, and place in the weapon triangle of swords, axes, and lances. Permadeath remains a key source of tension – a fallen hero is gone from the game for good, forcing the player to think through every move. The party can also recruit dozens of characters, including some enemy units who can be persuaded to switch sides through dialogue, giving the game plenty of room for experimenting with the squad's composition.

Because the title never officially released outside Japan, it reached Western players only through a fan translation, which earned it cult status among collectors of the GBA library. For the series, it also marked an important bridge between the older Super Famicom graphics and the fully animated battles that made Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade famous worldwide a year later.

Why play it: Because it's the missing link between classic Fire Emblem and its breakthrough Western debut, with gripping tactical battles and permanent character death.
