Hessian / The Mojon Twins hry
When someone says homebrew on the Commodore 64, most people imagine amateur attempts that are unplayable. The Mojon Twins are the exact opposite. This Spanish duo of developers proved that a retro platform from the 1980s is still alive to this day, and their titles often have a higher production level than many a period commercial game.
Hessian is one of their flagship projects, and it is an action platformer in the best sense of the word. The hero pushes through a labyrinth of hostile surroundings, collects equipment, searches for keys, and gradually opens up the way onward. The mechanics are built on the classic formula of exploration and combat, but with a feel for pacing and level design that forces the player to engage their head, not just their reflexes.
The strength of The Mojon Twins, however, does not lie in a single game. Their output is extensive and spans a range of 8-bit era platforms, from the ZX Spectrum through the Amstrad CPC to the Commodore 64 itself. Characteristic of them is a colorful, legible visual style and a sense of humor that seeps out of the titles and characters. Many of their games also come out under open licenses, so the community can further modify them and build upon them.
The cultural significance of this scene is enormous. It proves that retro hardware is not a museum exhibit but a living platform for which new, beatable, and often excellent games keep appearing. For C64 fans, discovering these titles is a little celebration, because they combine the nostalgia of a period look with a modern feel for playability.
With homebrew work it is always good to approach numbers with reserve, because verified data on sales or rankings usually does not exist for such projects. This, however, in no way diminishes the value of the games themselves, which is measured by playability, not marketing. And it is precisely here that The Mojon Twins excel.
