FIFA Soccer 3D
FIFA Soccer 3D arrived on the Nintendo 3DS as part of the launch lineup of sports titles, offering a simplified but recognizable version of that generation's popular EA Sports football series. Players had access to licensed leagues and clubs, a choice of national teams, and basic game modes including exhibition matches and a lightweight career, with controls adapted to a combination of buttons, the analog stick, and the handheld's touchscreen. The touchscreen was used, for example, to give teammates faster tactical instructions during a match, which reviews praised as a practical use of the console's second display. Players could also choose from several AI difficulty levels, making the game accessible even to less experienced fans of the genre.
Compared to the console entries of the generation, this was necessarily a significantly simplified experience — player animations, AI, and overall match fluidity had to give way to the performance limits of the portable hardware. Still, the presentation used the stereoscopic 3D effect to create a sense of depth on the pitch, which contemporary reviews often mentioned as a positive. The music and sound matched the series standard — stadium atmosphere and commentary gave matches at least a partially authentic feel, albeit with noticeably less variety of lines than on home consoles and a less elaborately detailed atmosphere of a packed stadium.
Reception was mixed to mildly positive; the game was generally considered a more successful portable football simulation than the rival handheld Pro Evolution Soccer, though neither could fully compete with the console versions. Today, FIFA Soccer 3D is interesting mainly as an example of how difficult it was in the early years of the 3DS to bring a complex, licensed sports simulation to a small screen without losing the series' core identity and the recognizable feel of controlling a team.
