Lucienne's Quest
Lucienne's Quest is a classic Japanese RPG and also one of the few that made it to the 3DO in an English version. The young sorceress Lucienne sets out on a journey during which she gathers a colorful party and faces a threat that soon outgrows her original assignment. It's told lightly, with humor and no attempt at grand drama, which sets the game apart from most of the ponderous fantasy stories of its time and makes it pleasantly undemanding company for long evenings. The characters are introduced gradually, each carrying their own reason for joining the quest at all.
Mechanically, it's a textbook JRPG: top-down view, moving through towns and dungeons, random encounters, and turn-based battles with spells, attacks, and items. Fights are clear, individual abilities have obviously readable uses, and the difficulty suits more of an entry point into the genre than a long test of patience. Progress is linear, the map opens chapter by chapter, and time between battles is filled with conversations among characters drawn with a distinctly comic-book character. Anyone who has played Japanese RPGs on other consoles will feel right at home immediately. The need to endlessly grind is present but not overdone, and the length of the whole campaign matches shorter entries in the genre rather than longer ones.
On the 3DO, the game used the CD mainly for music and for animated sequences in an anime style, which was still rare on consoles at the time. At the time, it passed without much attention — the console sold in small numbers in North America, and Japanese RPGs had no audience there waiting for them. That's exactly why it's a sought-after piece for collectors today: it's one of the few ways to play a traditional Japanese RPG on the 3DO without knowing Japanese. Mechanically it brings nothing revolutionary, but as proof of just how varied the 3DO's library actually was, it's certainly worth attention. It's a reminder of a time when Japanese developers tried to gain a foothold even on a platform that ultimately failed.
