Theme Park
Theme Park is a construction and management game from Bullfrog Productions in which an empty field grows into a full amusement park. The 3DO version arrived in 1995, bringing to console a title that had until then been the domain of computers. The player places rides, builds paths, hires staff, and above all watches how visitors behave — where they walk, where they bunch up, what bores them, and when their patience runs out. The park doesn't work like a plan on paper; it behaves like a living organism that reacts to every change you make.
The game's charm lies in the details of its economy. You can raise ticket prices, but people notice; you can add extra sugar to the soda so visitors get thirstier and buy more; you can build a roller coaster dangerously fast, raising both thrill and risk. Staff want raises or they go on strike, and neglected maintenance lets litter pile up across the park. Alongside the building there's also a business layer of buying land and researching new rides, so the game glides from carefree tinkering into bookkeeping without the player quite noticing. Expanding into other countries then adds different conditions and prices, so a tried-and-true approach doesn't work the same way everywhere.
On the 3DO the game leaned on CD audio: crowd noise, carousel music, and general park bustle give the screen full of tiny figures an unexpectedly lively character. Controlling it without a mouse is naturally more awkward than on a computer, and the interface takes a while to get used to, but the game itself remained untouched. At the time it was a huge success that, together with other Bullfrog titles, established the construction-and-management genre for entertainment sims and led directly to later theme-park-building games. Today Theme Park is still legible and pleasantly wicked — it's a game about turning human fun into a money machine, and that's exactly why it's still fun decades later. It suits a quick session just as well as an evening of full-scale building, because the park keeps running even while the player is just watching it for a while.
