Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is a Japanese development studio under Sega, responsible for the Yakuza series — known in Japan under its original name, Ryu ga Gotoku. The studio has built a reputation for games that combine gritty crime drama set in fictional districts inspired by Tokyo and Osaka with a completely unrestrained side content offering full of minigames, karaoke, baseball, darts, and absurd humor. Thanks to this combination of a serious story and boisterous side entertainment, the series has become one of the most distinctive Japanese brands of the modern era, and the studio has gradually expanded its scope beyond the action-adventure genre — including the detective spin-off series Judgment and a shift to turn-based combat inspired by classic Japanese RPGs. For many players outside Japan, Yakuza serves as an entry point into modern Japanese game design, as it combines local atmosphere with storytelling accessible to Western audiences as well.

History

The studio has its roots in an internal Sega team that, from the mid-2000s, worked on developing the first Yakuza for PlayStation 2. The game introduced the main character Kazuma Kiryu and the fictional district of Kamurocho, inspired by Tokyo's Kabukicho, and combined the style of B-movie yakuza films with a sophisticated combat system and extensive side content. The success of the first entries led the development team to formally become independent as Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, allowing it to focus fully on the long-term development of the brand across console generations.

A turning point for the series' international perception was Yakuza 0, a prequel set in the 1980s, which new players often cited as the ideal entry point thanks to its accessible storytelling and more aggressive marketing outside Japan. It was followed by a wave of remasters of older entries for PlayStation 4, allowing players to catch up on the extensive saga surrounding Kiryu before the series reached his story's conclusion in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life.

At the same time, the studio also experimented outside the main line. It created the detective spin-off Judgment, set in the same game world but with a different protagonist and an emphasis on investigation mechanics and tailing characters through the streets of Kamurocho. The truly decisive turn, however, came with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which introduced a new protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, and reworked the combat system from action-based to turn-based, drawing inspiration from classic Japanese RPGs. This move divided part of the loyal fanbase but opened the series to an entirely new audience and gave it the new subtitle Like a Dragon, under which it is also released internationally. Subsequent entries such as Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth further developed this direction, while smaller titles like Like a Dragon Gaiden or the remake Ishin! served as bridges between individual chapters of the story and made older content accessible to a new generation of players.

Key figures

For most of its history, the Yakuza series was embodied by producer and director Toshihiro Nagoshi, who was present at the birth of the first entry while still at Sega and set the tone for the whole brand for many years — both its serious criminal storyline and its bizarre side content. Nagoshi left Sega after many years to found his own studio, while leadership of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio passed to a new team, which guided the series through its shift to turn-based combat and to the new protagonist Ichiban Kasuga.

Present

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio today continues as an active part of Sega, still alternating major mainline entries with smaller spin-off projects and remasters that bring older titles to current platforms. The Like a Dragon brand has become one of the pillars of Sega's current lineup, and the studio regularly ports its games to new console generations as well, as shown by the release of Yakuza 0 Director's Cut on Switch 2. At the same time, the studio continues developing both branches of the series in parallel — Kazuma Kiryu's action-based legacy and the new turn-based style built around Ichiban Kasuga.
