A remake of the second game on the Dragon Engine; the first seamless transition between combat and exploration.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a remake of the second entry in the series from 2006, this time built on the Dragon Engine, which for the first time brought a seamless transition between combat and exploration with no visible loading screens. Kazuma Kiryu once again heads to Kamurocho and to the newly designed Osaka district of Sotenbori to prevent a war between the yakuza and a Korean organization and to uncover a conspiracy reaching all the way to the leadership of the Tojo clan. The story ranks among the most emotionally powerful in the whole series and also introduces a side plotline about detective Kaoru, which functions as a smaller, self-contained campaign with its own character arc.

The gameplay is built around exploring two large districts full of side quests, minigames, and businesses the player can build up to earn money, from a hostess club to their own cabaret, with the business management growing into a standalone economic minigame complete with its own staff and competitors. Combat is faster and smoother than in previous entries thanks to the new engine, which allows for fluid animations and larger crowds of opponents at once. On PlayStation 4, the game benefits from sharper graphics, better lighting, and significantly shorter loading times, so even years later it still feels surprisingly modern, and the new Sotenbori district with its own minigames and shops gives players a reason to explore beyond the main storyline.

Contemporary reviews praised above all the storytelling and tension of the main plot, which many players and journalists called one of the series' high points. The music and the nighttime city's soundscape support an atmosphere that's half melodrama, half action thriller, and the cinematically staged final battles are part of what the Yakuza series has long been known for. Kiwami 2 still stands today as proof that a remake can be more than a technical polish - it can be a full-fledged return to a story that holds up even years later and offers new players one of the best introductions to the world of Kazuma Kiryu.

Why play it: For fans of the Yakuza series craving one of its narrative highlights, where melodrama blends with cinematically staged battles and tension that holds up all the way to the end.
