Larian Studios is a Belgian studio that worked its way up from relatively modest beginnings to the top of the computer RPG genre. For many years it was primarily a matter for devoted fans of isometric role-playing games, until Baldur's Gate 3 turned it into one of the most talked-about game studios of the present day. Its journey is a textbook example of patiently building a craft — from smaller projects through its own original series to taking over one of the genre's most legendary brands.

History

Larian Studios built its reputation gradually on the Divinity series, which it opened with Divine Divinity, an isometric action RPG drawing inspiration from genre classics while adding its own distinctive humor and gameplay systems. The studio worked on the brand for years afterward, with each installment gradually expanding the world, the combat system, and multiplayer options. The turning point came with Divinity: Original Sin II, which combined a deep system of environmental interactions, cooperative play, and nonlinear storytelling into a form that earned acclaim from both players and critics, with the game later receiving an expanded Definitive Edition on additional platforms. This success opened the door for Larian to a much larger project — taking over the Baldur's Gate license, a legendary brand tied to the origins of the modern computer RPG. Baldur's Gate 3, built on the experience gathered during the development of Divinity, combined the rules of the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop game with a vast, reactive world and became one of the most successful and acclaimed RPGs of its generation. By releasing the game simultaneously on PC and the new generation of consoles, Larian confirmed that it could carry its ambitious projects through even beyond its traditional base. Throughout, the studio maintained its independence from major publishing houses, financing its growth mainly from the success of its own titles, which allowed it to gradually open additional offices in various European countries and expand its development team as the ambitions of individual projects grew. This gradual, seemingly unremarkable growth from a small Belgian studio into one of the most respected teams in the genre is now often cited as an example of how patience and focus on a single genre can, in the long run, bring greater success than chasing short-term trends.

Key figures

Larian Studios has long been associated with its founder and creative director, Swen Vincke, whose vision and direct connection to the RPG genre shaped the studio's direction from its early titles all the way to Baldur's Gate 3. Vincke has long positioned himself publicly as the studio's main creative voice, the person behind decisions on game systems and overall tone, and is also the one who has long represented the studio externally in its presentations and communication with the player community. Details about other key figures within the wider development team, however, would not be appropriate to elaborate on without certainty.

Today

Larian Studios today ranks among the most respected RPG studios in the world, and after the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3 it expanded with additional offices in various countries, giving it a significantly larger production capacity than it had during the development of the first Divinity. At the same time, the studio has repeatedly stated publicly that once support for Baldur's Gate 3 is finished, it wants to return to its own original projects outside licensed brands, continuing the history it built on the Divinity series. Thanks to the success of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian has earned a reputation as a studio that can combine the depth of a classic RPG with accessibility for a wider audience, and this position gives it considerable freedom in choosing which projects to pursue in the future.
