Star Trek
Star Trek is among the oldest brands to migrate from the television screen to the monitor, and its gaming form only came into its own at the start of the nineties. That was when Interplay began releasing the adventures Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Star Trek: Judgment Rites, which treated the source material with unusual seriousness. They were split into episodes like a television season, alternating between the bridge of the Enterprise and away missions on planet surfaces, and judged the player less on marksmanship than on conduct befitting a Starfleet captain. Alongside dialogue and puzzles sat ship combat decided by shields, power allocation and manoeuvring, not reflexes.
The nineties then spread the licence across everything with a screen: Star Trek: The Next Generation – Echoes from the Past on SNES and Mega Drive, ship simulators on Amiga and DOS, action-minded detours on PlayStation and Saturn. The peak of the classic era is usually taken to be Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Final Unity, which carried the rhythm of the show and the work of a whole crew into one adventure more faithfully than anything else. Towards the end of the decade the brand switched genres again: the tactical Starfleet Command, the action-driven Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force, the strategic Armada. Together they proved a licensed game need not be a cash-in glued to a broadcast schedule.
