Polda
The Polda series launched in 1998 on PC, and from its very first entry built a reputation as a distinctly Czech adventure game full of absurd, occasionally juvenile humor. The protagonist, bumbling policeman Pankrác, solves cases more by accident than through any real skill, and it's the contrast between his supposedly serious investigations and the utterly ridiculous situations around them that gave the series its signature tone. Developer Zima Software built the games on classic point-and-click mechanics with an inventory and dialogue trees, but there was no technical or graphical showmanship involved — the charm lay in locally rooted humor, parodies of 1990s Czech reality, and a willingness to not take itself too seriously.
More entries followed over the years — Polda 2 and Polda 3 expanded the world with new locations and characters while sticking to the same formula of short, gag-packed cases. The series carried on into the era of modern PCs with Polda 4, 5, 6, and finally Polda 7 in 2022, which moved the same hero into a more contemporary setting without betraying the underlying goofball spirit. It's this longevity and loyalty to the original joke, despite modest production means, that made Polda one of the few genuinely Czech gaming phenomena with a lasting cult following that has stuck with the series for more than two decades.
