Madden NFL – obaly dílů série

The Madden NFL series began back in 1988 as John Madden Football for the Apple II and home computers, developed by Electronic Arts together with former coach and longtime NFL television commentator John Madden, after whom it is named and whose face and voice accompanied the game for most of its history. From the start the goal was a faithful simulation of American football rather than arcade simplification — it was one of the first games to give players real playbooks, on-field player positioning, and the ability to call specific plays before every snap, setting it clearly apart from competitors built around fast, simplified action.

After securing the official NFL license in the early nineties, the series was renamed Madden NFL and became the flagship of the entire EA Sports brand. It is defined by yearly releases tied to the current season, licensed teams, stadiums and real players with updated stats, deep franchise and management modes that let players run a club for years into the future, and later the online Ultimate Team mode built around collecting player cards. Each year's cover traditionally features a star of that season, which became famous among fans through the superstitious so-called “Madden Curse,” the belief that the cover athlete would suffer an injury or a downturn in form the following year.

Across generations the series traveled a long road from two-dimensional, sixteen-bit versions on the SNES and Mega Drive, which still relied on simple sprites and a limited set of modes, through a handheld release on the Game Boy Color, to current entries on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series that run on a modernized Frostbite engine with far more elaborate physics, stadium atmosphere and player animation. For much of the 2000s it faced competition mainly from the NFL 2K series, until EA negotiated an exclusive license to the NFL brand and became the only major publisher of official football games, a shift that reshaped the entire genre and ended direct comparisons with a rival title for many years.

Madden NFL remains one of the longest continuously running sports series ever made and, for players around the world, a synonym for American football on consoles, even among those who follow the sport itself only casually. Its annual release cycle regularly sparks debate about how much genuine innovation each installment brings over the last, and the series is often criticized as a textbook example of a sports game living off its license and modest yearly updates — yet across console generations it has kept its reputation as the standard other sports titles are measured against.
