Colin McRae Rally
British studio Codemasters introduced Colin McRae Rally in 1998 on PlayStation, naming the series after Scottish driver Colin McRae, the 1995 World Rally Champion, who was personally involved in the project and lent both his name and input on the driving model. Unlike the arcade rally games of the time, the series aimed for more faithful driving physics, car damage that actually affected handling, and real-world stages inspired by World Rally Championship events held across many countries. Players worked through several difficulty levels and surface types - gravel, tarmac, snow - where every mistake in a corner, every clipped tree or run off the road immediately showed in how the car behaved, often for the rest of that stage.
The following entries - Colin McRae Rally 2.0, 3, 04 and Colin McRae Rally 2005 - gradually expanded the car roster with official team and driver licenses, added more elaborate career modes, custom track editors and online competition, and kept refining the driving model toward even more faithful responses to terrain. The series also reached PC and Xbox, and appeared in stripped-down versions on mobile phones, an unusual move at the time for a brand of this standing. After Colin McRae died in a helicopter crash in 2007, Codemasters renamed the brand to DiRT, which in style and name still nods to its founder today. Colin McRae Rally therefore remains one of the games that pushed rally as a video game genre toward simulation and influenced later competing titles built around realistic driving.
