An action adaptation of the cult anime Robotech; you pilot transformable Veritech fighters.

Robotech: Battlecry brings an action take on the cult anime series Robotech to Xbox, putting the player in the role of a pilot of transformable Veritech fighters that switch between fighter jet, humanoid battle, and transitional Guardian forms depending on the situation. The campaign follows the events of the first Robotech War against the alien Zentraedi race and is interwoven with the story of the series it directly references, including familiar characters and key moments that fans know from the animated original.

Gameplay combines aerial combat in space and in atmosphere with ground firefights after transforming the mech into its humanoid form, requiring the player to constantly switch strategy depending on enemy type and terrain, and to quickly decide which form of the mech best suits the situation. Missions also included protecting allied ships and civilians from overwhelming enemy forces, adding an element of tactical planning and priority juggling to an otherwise straightforward action game amid a chaotic battle. Technically, it was one of the first attempts to bring transforming mechs into a fully 3D action environment on a console, with an emphasis on quickly switching forms in the middle of combat. The music and sound drew on the atmosphere of the series and aimed to evoke the feeling of a direct continuation of the animated original, with the characteristic sounds of the mechs transforming being among the details fans of the series recognized instantly.

At the time, the game was praised especially by fans of the Robotech series, for whom it represented one of the few genuinely faithful game adaptations of the license, while the wider audience saw it as a solid but unremarkable action game. Even years later, Battlecry remains an interesting item for collectors of mecha games and fans of retro anime licenses, who appreciate the idea of mech transformation as a central gameplay mechanic – fairly fresh for its time and rather unique among Xbox action games.

Why play it: For fans of the Robotech series and collectors of mecha games, it offers one of the few genuinely faithful game adaptations of the license, with an original mechanic of transforming your mech right in the middle of battle.
