MotoGP 2
MotoGP 2 is a sequel in the motorcycle racing series based on the official MotoGP World Championship license, and on Xbox it offered one of the technically most sophisticated motorcycle simulators of the console's early era. The player races with licensed riders and teams on real championship tracks, with the game emphasizing realistic motorcycle lean in corners, braking at the edge of grip, and sensitive rear-wheel power control when exiting turns, setting it apart from more arcade-style racing titles focused on flashy crashes and collisions. The career mode also offered progression across an entire championship season, the ability to track rivals' results in individual races, and gradual bike setup tuning based on experience gained on previous tracks.
The Xbox version used the Xbox Live online connection not only for races against other players, but also for voice communication between riders during a race, which in 2003 was a fairly innovative use of the headset as part of the competitive experience. The graphical rendering of tracks and motorcycles was above the genre average on the console, and the game offered detailed difficulty settings ranging from simplified controls with automatic corrections to a fully simulation-based handling model that required a feel for every corner.
At the time, the game was valued especially by motorcycle racing fans for its faithfulness to the license and precision of control, although the demanding simulation model could put off casual players looking for a more arcade experience. MotoGP 2 is still remembered today as one of the most seriously crafted motorcycle simulators of the early Xbox era and an example of how a console's online features could enrich even a traditionally single-player-oriented racing genre, at a time when voice communication between rivals on the track was not yet a given for console games.
Why play it: For motorcycle racing fans, it offers license fidelity and control precision from one of the most seriously crafted simulators of the early Xbox era, including the then-unusual voice communication between online rivals.
