The game that popularized the bullet heaven genre; automatic defense against hordes of enemies.

Vampire Survivors is a game from studio poncle that popularized the genre nicknamed "bullet heaven" — a reversed take on bullet hell, where the character automatically defends against ever-thickening waves of enemies while the player focuses mainly on movement, dodging, and choosing the upgrades offered after each level-up. As time passes, dozens of weapons and passive items pile up on screen, and their combinations create extremely effective chain attacks capable of wiping out an entire screen of enemies in an instant, with the goal of each map being to survive a fixed time limit up to a final boss fight. Progress between runs unlocks additional characters, weapons, and their mutual evolutions, so the player gradually builds their own strategy for surviving as efficiently as possible.

On Xbox Series X|S, the game runs smoothly even when the screen is literally packed with hundreds of visual effects and enemies at once, which is absolutely crucial for this type of gameplay and could significantly slow the game down on less powerful hardware. Retro pixel-art graphics and a simple but inventive soundtrack evoke the atmosphere of older action titles, while the elaborate structure for unlocking characters, weapons, and secret combinations motivates replaying individual levels in ever new ways.

Vampire Survivors was first released in early access on PC in 2022 and quickly became a phenomenon thanks to its low price, high addictiveness, and generous amount of content, before arriving on consoles, including Xbox Series X|S, and in the Game Pass catalog. The game is now considered the founder of the entire bullet heaven genre, which has inspired dozens of direct successors, and in the Game Pass catalog it's among the titles players often end up spending far more time on than they originally expected, precisely because of the constant promise of an even better run.

Why play it: For its low price, high addictiveness, and the endless promise of an even better run, it's the founder of the entire bullet heaven genre, one that players often end up spending far more time on than they originally expected.
