Calm exploration of a desert inspired by Moebius's comics; a search for one's own mask, without combat.

Sable is a calm exploration adventure set in a desert world inspired by the comic art of Moebius, in which a young girl named Sable sets out on a traditional journey called the Gliding, whose purpose is to find her own mask and identity before she permanently settles within her tribe. The player explores a vast desert on an anti-gravity glider, completes small tasks for scattered inhabitants, gathers parts to upgrade the vehicle, and uncovers the remnants of an ancient, mysterious civilization, all without the game placing any emphasis on combat or time pressure. The whole world is open from the very start, and the player decides for themselves which direction to head and in what order to complete the individual tasks.

The distinctive flat, comic-shaded visual style is one of the game's most recognizable elements, and together with the ambient, synth-driven soundtrack it creates a meditative, dreamlike atmosphere for the desert wandering. On Xbox Series X|S the game benefits from better performance compared to its original release on the older console generation, running more stably and with shorter loading times, which at launch on older machines were one of the main complaints and noticeably disrupted the otherwise relaxed pacing.

Critics praised especially the unique visual style and the sense of freedom in exploring the world without artificial barriers, while technical shortcomings in early versions dampened the overall enthusiasm somewhat. On Xbox Series X|S, though, most of these problems were fixed, making the console version regarded as one of the better ways to truly enjoy Sable's unusual atmosphere and art style to the fullest. The absence of combat and time pressure makes the game a suitable choice for players seeking a purely contemplative experience of exploring a world that's alien yet somehow familiar, where the reward is the sheer feeling of freedom and the aesthetic experience of the landscape itself, rather than points or achievements.

Why play it: For players seeking purely contemplative exploration without combat or time pressure – the console version also fixes the technical shortcomings of the early releases.
