A restart of the series' most famous branch; a raw war with civilians caught in the middle of the conflict.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from 2019 is a reboot of the series' most famous branch and a deliberate return to a realistic, raw depiction of modern war. The campaign takes the player through London streets, a fictional Middle Eastern country and special forces operations, repeatedly pausing on civilians caught up in the conflict. Missions often play out at night, with night-vision goggles and an emphasis on verifying the target first, so the pace is slower and tenser than in previous entries.

Mechanically, the novelty rests on the studio's new technology, which brought elaborate weapon physics, the ability to lean a weapon against a corner, careful door-opening and an overall heavier, weightier feel to shooting. The Gunsmith system lets you fit dozens of attachments to every weapon, changing aiming behavior, stability and range, turning customization into a hobby of its own. Multiplayer offered classic modes alongside sprawling battles with dozens of players and cooperative operations, and above all it was the first in the series to open full cross-platform play. On Xbox One the game looks exceptionally good thanks to its work with light and shadow, though the highest effect settings are reserved for stronger hardware.

The atmosphere is carried by subdued, anxious music and sound that literally hurts in confined spaces. Contemporary reception was very strong on the gameplay side, while the narrative sparked debate over how it handles real historical motifs and civilian suffering. The title fundamentally shaped the brand's future direction, since it spawned a follow-up free battle royale that became a phenomenon in its own right. Today the game is worth playing mainly for its campaign and gunplay feel, which rank among the best console shooters offer. Missions built around night vision, silent movement and slowly clearing a house rank among the strongest scenes the series has ever produced and are still often remembered fondly. Thanks to them the game feels more like a tense thriller than the usual military spectacle.
