A dark action RPG journey through twelve towers; the player must save his beloved from a curse.

Pandora's Tower tells the story of the young man Aeron, whose beloved Elena is struck by a mysterious curse and gradually transforms into a monster. The only hope for saving her lies in the flesh of monsters slain in the so-called Scar Towers, linked to Elena by a magical chain, and so the player sets out into twelve isolated towers full of puzzles, traps, and enemies to bring back rare organs capable of slowing or even reversing the curse. The story unfolds slowly and with an emphasis on atmosphere, as the player returns to Elena's chamber between expeditions for conversations that shape their relationship.

The core of the gameplay is a chain weapon called the Oraclos Chain, which can be used as a whip for ranged combat, as a hook for pulling objects, exposing enemy weak points and dragging them to the ground, or as a rope for climbing and operating mechanisms – a surprisingly versatile tool around which both tower exploration and boss battles are built. The game also works with relentless time pressure: the longer the player delays between expeditions, the deeper Elena's transformation progresses, which pushes the player toward frequent returns, offering her flesh, and caring for her, with these choices affecting not only the relationship between the characters but also one of several possible endings.

Visually, it's a bleak gothic fantasy with a dark palette and a dense, oppressive atmosphere, underscored by a melancholic orchestral soundtrack from composer Yasunori Mitsuda. In Europe the game was released only in limited quantities, and in North America it reached store shelves only thanks to the fan campaign Operation Rainfall, which at the time pushed Nintendo to bring Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story to the West as well. Today, Pandora's Tower is valued as one of the last notable JRPG offerings on the Wii and a nostalgic gem for fans of unconventional, darkly toned action RPGs, whose physical copies, due to their small print run, have also become a fairly sought-after and steadily appreciating item among collectors.
