Atmospheric sci-fi puzzle adventure; cloning and consciousness transfer between copies.

The Swapper is an atmospheric sci-fi puzzle adventure by the Finnish studio Facepalm Games, which arrived on Wii U as an eShop port following its success on PC. The player wakes up on a remote space station surrounded by a strange crystalline organism, carrying a peculiar device called the Swapper that can create perfect clones of the player's character and then transfer consciousness between them.

The core puzzle mechanic lets the player create up to four clones at once, which remain standing exactly where they were created, and then switch their mind between them – enabling spatial puzzles that require one clone to stay on a switch while another moves on, or clones falling from a height simultaneously while the player jumps into the safer one at the last moment. Some areas of the station further restrict where cloning or switching is possible, gradually complicating the puzzles and forcing the player to think several steps ahead. Alongside the mechanical side, the game raises philosophical questions about identity and consciousness that surface through the crew's found journals and the question of whether a clone is truly the same person as the original. The crystalline organism on the station also communicates with the player telepathically, and its answers gradually reveal what really happened there.

Visually, the game combines hand-made diorama models photographed into 2D backgrounds with a dark, industrial station design, giving it an unusually tangible, almost stop-motion atmosphere, reinforced by quiet, ambient music and the distant rumble of abandoned machinery. Contemporary reviews were very positive, praising especially the elegant game mechanic and dense atmosphere, with the short length being a minor criticism. The Swapper is still cited today as an example of thoughtful puzzle design, where one simple mechanic is enough to build an entire gripping game.

Why play: For its elegant, single-mechanic puzzle design and dense, stop-motion atmosphere, it remains a frequently cited example of thoughtful puzzle adventure design, despite its short length.
