A medieval browser strategy game about building villages and alliances; the foundation of InnoGames.

Tribal Wars from 2003 set the browser strategy genre in the Middle Ages — the player started with a single village that had to be developed by constructing buildings, mining resources, and training units, both to defend it against neighbors and to plan their own expeditions against enemy territory and resources. Diplomacy played a key role: a lone village had little chance of survival, so players founded tribes and alliances, coordinated attacks, and built their reputation on a server called a world, where hundreds of players competed at once.

With this game, InnoGames laid the foundation for its entire later portfolio of browser strategy games, and Tribal Wars became one of the most widely played titles of the genre in Europe, with dozens of localized versions and active worlds running simultaneously across the continent. The game demanded patience and long-term planning — building structures and moving units took real hours or even days, so success depended more on strategic thinking and cooperation within the tribe than on quick reflexes or constantly watching the screen.

Tribal Wars remains active to this day and represents, for many players, the archetype of the browser strategy game, one against which dozens of competing titles from across Europe and beyond were later measured. InnoGames built its entire subsequent game portfolio on its success, and Tribal Wars remained the studio's flagship even years after release, with active community forums and players who have spent years in the game.

Why play it: For players who prefer slow strategic planning, diplomacy, and cooperation within a clan over fast-paced action battles.
