Surviv.io

Battle royale 2017 Justin Kim ⏱ Medium · ~3–10 h

2D battle royale right in the browser; smaller scale, the same dose of adrenaline.

Surviv.io brought the battle royale genre, by then already made famous by major titles, into a lightweight 2D form directly in the browser. The 2017 game was created by developer Justin Kim, and the concept stayed true to the big role models – dozens of players drop onto a single map, gather weapons and gear, and survive in a gradually shrinking safe zone until only one winner remains.

A simplified top-down view and lightweight 2D graphics let Surviv.io run smoothly even on weaker computers, and it could be played without installation directly in a browser window, which was a major advantage over the more demanding battle royale games of the time that required a powerful computer. Mouse-and-keyboard controls were straightforward and fast, matches lasted on the order of minutes, so players could get through several rounds of the battle royale experience in the time a single round of a large 3D title would take elsewhere.

Thanks to the combination of low requirements, quick accessibility, and faithfully preserving the genre's key elements, Surviv.io found its own audience among players who wanted the tension of battle royale without having to download a huge game or own a powerful computer. It became one of the most successful attempts to bring this popular genre into the world of browser games.

Why play it: For battle royale fans who want fast rounds with no demands on hardware – Surviv.io offers the same tension as major 3D titles, but for free and with no installation, right in the browser.
