Madness Interactive

Akční 2003 Max Abernethy ⏱ Short · up to ~3 h

A sandbox built on the Madness Combat phenomenon; create your own scenes full of ragdoll violence.

Madness Interactive, from 2003, brought the brutal, stylized action of the internet phenomenon Madness Combat into a playable sandbox where players could build their own scenes full of shootouts and ragdoll violence, entirely to their own imagination. Players controlled a stick figure resembling the heroes of Krinkels' animations and pitted him against waves of enemies, while the characters' physics model turned every hit into a grotesquely exaggerated but very satisfying bodily reaction, flying clear across the screen.

The game's strength lay mainly in its editor: players could build their own levels, import characters and weapons from the online community, and share the results, which turned Madness Interactive into a sort of unofficial toolset for the entire subculture around Madness Combat. The black-and-white, raw graphics and exaggeratedly violent stylization referred directly back to the Flash animations the game was based on, and this fan-made origin gave it an authenticity that official tie-in games rarely have among players.

Madness Interactive remained primarily a community project without much commercial backing, but it carved out a solid and lasting place among fans of the Flash era and stylized violence, complete with its own tournaments and level-building competitions. The game's legacy survives to this day thanks to enthusiasts who still release new mods and scenes, even though Madness Combat itself has since moved on to more professional animation.

Why play: For fans of Madness Combat and stylized ragdoll violence who especially appreciate being able to build and share their own scenes in the community editor.
