A Dark Room
A Dark Room starts in complete darkness with a single button for adding wood to the fire, and just like Candy Box!, it builds on the principle of gradual revelation – from a quiet text room, a settlement, exploration of the surroundings, and eventually a surprisingly extensive adventure with its own story and twists unfold within moments. It was created in 2013 by Michael Townsend, and the minimalist, purely text-based presentation only heightens the sense of discovery, because the player never knows what will come with the next unlocked option or extra button.
The controls are based on simple text buttons and a gradually growing menu of actions, so the game can be played with virtually no graphics at all, just a few lines of text and numerical counters for stocks of wood, fur, and food. This starkness was deliberate – the author wanted the player's attention focused on the gradual layering of mechanics, from surviving by the fire through building a village to expeditions into the unknown, rather than on the visual side, which would only distract from the main idea.
A Dark Room later also came out as a paid app for mobile platforms, where thanks to its clear text interface it kept the same gameplay as in the browser, and it is still cited today as one of the best examples of minimalist storytelling through game mechanics alone. The original web version remains freely available, so it can be tried without any risk before the player possibly decides on the portable mobile version.
Why play it: For players who enjoy discovering hidden mechanics step by step and don't mind a purely text-based, low-cost presentation.
