Merge tiles with matching numbers up to 2048; the minimalist puzzle viral hit of 2014.

2048 is one of the cleanest examples of how a simple idea can circle the entire internet within a few weeks. The principle is known by practically everyone today – on a square game board you slide tiles with matching numbers, which merge and double on contact, with the goal of reaching a tile with the value 2048. The game was created in 2014 by nineteen-year-old Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli over a single weekend as a personal project, inspired by older similar games such as Threes.

The controls are trivial – four directional moves, no other elements, no tutorials. It's precisely this minimalist purity, combined with a simple color palette for the tiles, that made the game an ideal "time killer" for anyone who had a moment free in a browser or on their phone. Shortly after its release, 2048 became a viral phenomenon, hundreds of clones with different themes appeared, and the game permanently entered the history of web games as an example of how the bare minimum is enough to make a maximum impact.

Unlike many other viral hits, 2048 has remained available to this day – it's played for free directly in the browser, with no installation and no ads, in exactly the form in which Cirulli originally released it as an open-source project. The simplicity of the rules doesn't mean shallowness, though – higher levels require carefully thought-out strategy for where to gradually arrange the tiles so the board doesn't get stuck.

Why play it: A great choice for anyone who wants a quick, thoughtful game for a few minutes – you'll understand the rules in ten seconds, mastering them takes much more.
