GeoGuessr

GeoGuessr turned ordinary Google Street View panoramas into an addictive geography guessing game. The concept is simple: the game "drops" the player at a random spot on the world map, where they can look around freely and move through the immediate surroundings, and their task is to guess as accurately as possible where they are. The game was created in 2013 by Swedish developer Anton Wallén, originally as a small project with no big ambitions.

GeoGuessr's charm lies in how much it can challenge even people with solid geography knowledge – players learn to spot details like the type of utility poles, the color of road markings, traffic sign styles, or vegetation in order to guess at least the right continent or country. Over time, game modes, leaderboards, timed challenges, and the ability to play against other players online were added, turning what was originally a leisurely puzzle into a competitive discipline with a following of dedicated competitive players. Visually the game draws purely on real Street View photographs – no additional graphics are needed, the world itself creates the atmosphere.

From a modest web project, GeoGuessr grew over the years into a globally followed phenomenon with its own community of top players and streamed tournaments, where competitors can guess a location to within kilometers without any hints at all. The game still runs in the browser today; the basic version is available for free, while more advanced modes and features are part of a paid subscription.
