Rocket League
Rocket League is a game whose description sounds like a joke, and yet it's one of the most precisely tuned competitive titles of the last decade: soccer played with rocket-powered cars in an enclosed arena. The rules are trivial, namely get the giant ball into the opponent's goal, and anyone can learn the controls within a minute. Underneath that, though, is a physics model that players spend years learning. The cars can jump, spin in mid-air, bounce off walls and the ceiling, and use collected boost fuel to launch upward and strike the ball out of the air, so the gap between a beginner and an experienced player is enormous, and the game is effectively played in three dimensions.
Matches last five minutes, played in lineups from one-on-one up to three-on-three, and every duel for the ball is also a duel for position, since whoever launches badly leaves their goal empty. Around that core sits extensive car customization, seasonal content, and ranked ladders. The Switch version launched in the console's first year and kept the smoothness that's essential for this game, albeit at the cost of lower resolution and simpler effects. It supports cross-play with other platforms, which significantly extends the lifespan of a competitive title on less powerful hardware, and local multiplayer on a single screen is also included.
The atmosphere rests on simple, clean graphics, explosions on impact, and an electronic soundtrack that keeps the tempo without becoming distracting. After launching in 2015, the game became a phenomenon, moved to a free-to-play model, and built a strong competitive scene with its own tournaments. Today it remains one of the few titles that work just as well as fifteen minutes of couch fun as they do as a discipline you can devote hundreds of hours to, and on Switch it's still always within reach. Crucially, the game has no purchasable content that grants any advantage, so the outcome depends solely on how well someone flies and reads the ball. Landing that first aerial hit, meanwhile, is a moment most players remember.
