A circuit racer between arcade and simulation; one of the most ambitious ports on Switch.

GRID Autosport is one of the most ambitious ports on Switch ever: a full-fledged circuit racer from Codemasters, brought to the handheld by Feral Interactive. It's neither arcade nor a hardcore simulator, but a middle ground between the two. The cars have noticeable weight, tires lose grip when the player pushes too hard into a corner, and damage affects handling. At the same time, the game offers so many assists that it can be tuned from a relaxed ride to a mode where every mistake is final.

The career consists of five disciplines that play completely differently. Touring cars are overtaken through nudging and body contact, GT cars demand a smooth racing line, single-seaters tolerate no contact at all, drift events score angle and fluidity, and endurance races force the player to watch tire wear over long distances. The player races under a team's colors alongside a teammate who can be sent ahead or ordered to drive safely via radio. Feral split the game into smaller data chunks and lowered the resolution, yet still managed to keep the full grid of rivals and stable smoothness. Wheel support, a touch menu, and later added online multiplayer made it a complete release rather than a stripped-down demo.

The visuals rely on clean lighting and honest car models, and engine sound plus crowd noise do more for the atmosphere than the music, which mostly plays in the menus. The original 2014 release was well received as the series' return to racing without unnecessary spectacle, and the Switch port earned admiring reactions precisely because of its technical achievement. Today it remains one of the few racing titles on the platform that offer serious circuit racing, and for players who want something other than go-karts on the go, it's practically a mandatory choice. At the same time, it's a showcase of how much can be squeezed out of the Switch hardware when a studio that knows exactly what to sacrifice and what to keep handles the port.
