Pacific Drive
Pacific Drive is a survival and vehicle-maintenance game from Ironwood Studios, in which the player takes charge of an abandoned car stranded in a mysterious, anomaly-ridden region of the US Pacific Northwest known as the Olympic Exclusion Zone. The core of the game is careful vehicle upkeep - repairing bodywork after collisions, replacing worn parts, and gradually installing upgrades in the garage - combined with excursions into the surrounding area, where the player gathers resources and confronts supernatural phenomena such as lightning storms, radiation, or spatial anomalies that reshape the landscape around them.
On PlayStation 5, the game depicts a bleak, misty, rain-soaked landscape of the US Northwest with a strong emphasis on vehicle sound effects - creaking bodywork, crackling electronics, rattling loose parts - which turn the car into an almost independent, living character of the story. The atmosphere combines the claustrophobia of the car's enclosed space with the tension of the open, dangerous surroundings beyond the glass, and the sparse, ambient soundtrack effectively underscores the sense of isolation and solitude. Between expeditions, the player also upgrades their home garage and resource storage.
Pacific Drive was praised by critics for its original combination of the survival genre with vehicle care and for its dense, tight atmosphere, though the repetitiveness of some expeditions was repeatedly cited as a weakness. As the game progresses, the player develops a genuine emotional bond with the car, since its condition often determines whether a dangerous excursion can even make it back safely to the garage. Each expedition also proceeds under the pressure of limited time and unpredictable anomalies, so even a seemingly routine trip for resources can quickly turn into a fight for survival. As a smaller independent game, it showed that an unconventional combination of at-first-glance mismatched mechanics can find a grateful audience on PlayStation 5 even without the extensive marketing of major publishers.
Why play it: For fans of unconventional survival games, it offers a dense atmosphere and a genuine emotional bond with the vehicle, though the repetitiveness of some expeditions may dull the tension over time.
