The climax of the Norse saga of Kratos and Atreus; the son becomes a playable character for the first time.

God of War Ragnarök closes out the Norse duology about Kratos and his son Atreus. Fimbulwinter has already covered all nine realms, both Odin and Thor are hot on the heroes' heels, and the question of whether prophecy can be changed becomes the spine of the whole story. The game continues in the form of one long, unbroken take with no cuts, weaving together combat, exploration and conversations on the move. Atreus, for the first time, also becomes a fully playable character with his own sections and a different fighting style.

Combat builds on the previous game and expands it. The Leviathan Axe still freezes, the Blades of Chaos still burn, and a new third weapon arrives that fundamentally changes the rhythm of encounters; each one comes with its own set of skills, runes and finishing moves. Enemies are more varied than before, bosses have readable yet demanding attack patterns, and the game offers a wide range of difficulty settings along with exceptionally thorough accessibility options. The nine realms are more open, with side quests that have their own narrative arcs, puzzles hidden in ruins, and treasures tucked away behind clever use of your weapons. Both Kratos and Atreus have their own skill trees, and the game regularly switches who the player controls, so the combat rhythm never gets stale.

The title launched simultaneously on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, but on the new console it offered higher resolution, smoother performance, and haptic feedback support that lets you feel every axe swing in your hands. Visually it excels through its handling of light in snowy passes and the colorful fantasy of realms like Vanaheim or Alfheim, while the music leans on choirs and Norse instruments. Critics received the game exceptionally well, praising the character writing and the performances, with the main reservations aimed at how faithfully it follows its predecessor mechanically. Today, Ragnarök stands as one of the strongest arguments for the series as a whole. The studio later added the free Valhalla expansion, which recasts the combat system in a roguelite form and returns to the hero's past.
