Sound Shapes

Sound Shapes blends platforming and a musical instrument into a single whole so elegantly that the boundary between them dissolves after just a while. The player controls a small sticky ball that clings to certain surfaces, crawls along walls and ceilings, and collects notes scattered throughout the level. Each collected note is instantly woven into the track playing in the background, so progressing through a level literally builds a song; the lethal elements have their own sound and rhythm, so even avoiding obstacles becomes part of the musical structure.

The campaign is divided into several albums, each with its own artist and musician and its own mood, ranging from lightly sketched worlds to strictly technical environments. Because of this, the game feels like a collection of short, heavily stylized pieces rather than one continuous adventure. The other half of the experience is an editor, in which the player can build their own level and their own track from the same building blocks and share it with others, turning the game into a kind of playful sequencer accessible even to people without any musical training. The PlayStation 3 version shared save progress with the handheld version, so you could continue on a second device.

Reviews praised especially the combination of ideas that on paper sound like an art experiment but end up playing pleasantly and clearly. The complexity of the platforming portion is modest, so the main campaign takes only a few hours, with the real value lying in replayability and community-made levels. Today, Sound Shapes stands as one of the best examples of what made the small digital scene on PlayStation 3 valuable: it offered games that didn't need a huge budget, because all they needed was one original idea carried through to completion with carefully executed craft.
