Persona 4 Arena
Persona 4 Arena is a 2D fighting game created for Atlus by Arc System Works, the experienced developer behind the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series. Instead of the usual dungeon-crawling, characters from Persona 3 and especially Persona 4 here settle their dispute in a beat 'em up tournament, set shortly after the events of the fourth game, when a mysterious television network reappears in the town of Inaba, bringing old-new threats with it. The Persona system as a combat tool naturally carries over into the fighting system – each character controls one attacking and one defensive action tied to their guardian demon, which allows the game to combine standard 2D fighter combos with the tactical use of Persona abilities familiar to players from the main entries.
Besides an arcade and a story mode, which in scope and amount of dialogue resembles a visual novel with combat segments more than a classic fighter, the game also offers online battles and leaderboards, a training mode, and a character gallery for players who want to dive deeper into the combat system. The PlayStation 3 version was one of two launch platforms – the game also released simultaneously on Xbox 360 – and both editions are practically identical in terms of content and technical aspects. There's no notable difference in resolution, frame rate, or story mode content; the only practical difference is the network infrastructure, namely PlayStation Network instead of Xbox Live for online matches, leaderboards, and downloading any additional characters.
For players already accustomed to the PlayStation console from previous Persona entries, this is therefore a natural choice without any compromise – neither save data nor any content from the main series carries over, but the environment and PlayStation control scheme will feel familiar. The game remains an interesting side story for series fans who want to see their favorite characters from Inaba in a different genre without losing the characteristic humor, relationships, and musical style built up in the main Persona entries.
Why play: For Persona fans with a PlayStation console, this is a natural choice without compromise - they get to see their favorite characters from Inaba in a different genre without losing the series' characteristic humor and music.
