Destroying buildings with Geo-Mod 2.0 isn't an effect here, it's the core game mechanic.

Red Faction: Guerrilla moved the series from linear shooting corridors to an open world on Mars, where the player, as a member of the resistance organization Red Faction, fights against the oppressive mining corporation Ultor that controls the entire planet and its inhabitants. The key new feature was the Geo-Mod 2.0 physics engine, which allowed players to demolish buildings, bridges, and bases almost freely using a sledgehammer, explosives, vehicles, or a rocket launcher, turning environmental destruction into a core gameplay mechanic rather than a mere visual effect as in competing titles. Liberating individual districts from corporate control gradually built up support among the population and opened access to further areas of the Martian colony.

On PS3 the game offered a sprawling, if somewhat desolate, Martian landscape scattered with settlements and military bases, through which the player moved on foot, by vehicle, and using a jetpack that enabled short flights. The sound design and music effectively underscored the harsh, industrial atmosphere of an uprising against overwhelming odds, while missions often centered on sabotage, freeing hostages, and gradually weakening enemy infrastructure through guerrilla-style tactics rather than direct confrontation. The game also offered a cooperative multiplayer mode and a standalone competitive mode focused purely on demolishing buildings.

Critics praised the game especially for its innovative destruction system, which had no equal on the market at the time and functioned as a full-fledged gameplay mechanic, even though the open world was seen as somewhat emptier and more repetitive than in competing titles. Red Faction: Guerrilla became a cult favorite among fans of physics simulations and is still cited today as one of the few titles to elevate environmental destruction into a genuine gameplay mechanic rather than just a flashy backdrop. Even years later its demolition system feels surprisingly satisfying and technically ahead of its time, making it a favorite pick for players looking for something other than a classic shooter.

Why play it: Thanks to a demolition system that still feels satisfying and technically ahead of its time, Red Faction: Guerrilla is a favorite pick for players looking for something other than a classic shooter.
