Catherine
Catherine tells the story of Vincent Brooks, a young man torn about the future with his girlfriend Katherine, who falls into an affair with a mysterious seductress named Catherine while also being tormented by nightmares. In them, he must climb collapsing towers of blocks to escape death, representing his existential anxiety about adulthood and commitment. Atlus, renowned for the Persona series, created an unusual combination of puzzle platforming with a psychologically mature story about relationships, infidelity, and the fear of responsibility.
The puzzle sequences demanded quick thinking and precise planning while rearranging blocks under time pressure, since the tower's lower rows fell away into the void, forcing the player to climb before they could fully plan an ideal path. New block types with their own rules, from icy to explosive, were introduced over time, and between floors, points earned could be spent on helpful items. These sequences contrasted with slower, dialogue-rich scenes in a bar between the nightly episodes, where the player drank, texted, and made choices within a moral alignment system between order and chaos that influenced both dialogue and endings.
Critics praised the game's courage in addressing adult relationship anxieties through an unusual gaming language, along with the dark humor running through the entire story. Catherine became a cult favorite, valued for its originality, and cemented Atlus's reputation as a studio willing to experiment outside the traditional JRPG formula, which later led to the expanded version, Catherine: Full Body. Different endings depending on the chosen moral alignment included bizarre alternative scenarios beyond the ordinary spectrum of human relationships, giving the game unusual replay value for a title built primarily on linear storytelling. To this day, it remains one of the few cases where an abstract logic puzzle became a legible metaphor for the protagonist's own panic.
