A stylish 2D brawler with striking comic-book cel-shading from director Hideki Kamiya.

A stylish 2D brawler with comic-book cel-shading from studio Clover. Film buff Joe finds himself in the world of a movie and gains superhero powers, such as slowing or speeding up time, which he uses to solve both battles and puzzles. Inventive gameplay, high difficulty and boundless style make it an original. The combination of film tricks and combat is brilliant. The comic-book aesthetic and over-the-top action pathos entertain from the start. Mechanically brilliant and visually unmistakable, one of the most distinctive titles of the whole generation.

The game was created as part of Capcom's Capcom Five project and first appeared on the Nintendo GameCube, where it ran smoothly with its distinctive cel-shaded visuals and the slow-motion and speed-up effects that the whole combat system is built around. Only after the GameCube failed to sell well did Capcom also release a PlayStation 2 version, adding a small amount of bonus content beyond the original. The core gameplay, difficulty and length remain the same across both versions, with only presentation details differing. The GameCube release counts as the original and reference platform, since the game was designed and tuned for it, but the PS2 version is an equally valid choice for anyone who prefers that console.
