A light-gun shooter with pedal-controlled cover; it truly comes alive with the GunCon 2 peripheral.

Time Crisis 3 brought to the PlayStation 2 an arcade light-gun shooter that made the Time Crisis series famous for its cover mechanic — the player presses a foot pedal to duck behind obstacles and reload, then releases it to pop up and fire at enemies. This simple but tense loop made the game an ideal experience both in arcades and at home with the GunCon 2 peripheral, which Namco released for the home version to recreate the arcade feel as faithfully as possible. You could also play with a regular controller, but it was with the light-gun peripheral that the game truly showed its qualities and brought the arcade atmosphere into the living room.

The game offers a linear progression through several missions full of soldiers, vehicles, and standout boss fights, with the story following a pair of mercenaries fighting against a fictional dictatorship threatening a small island nation. Besides the main campaign, Time Crisis 3 also includes additional modes focused on timed shooting and scoring, which extend the otherwise fairly short game's playtime, and unlockable content motivated players to replay it on higher difficulties. The graphics were clean and action-packed for their time, with an emphasis on smooth environmental motion and precise hit registration — a key parameter for the genre.

In reviews, the title was praised especially for faithfully bringing the arcade experience home and for the polished cover mechanic that became synonymous with the whole series. Without a light gun, the game loses some of its charm and plays worse with a standard controller, but it still stands as an example of precise genre design. Time Crisis 3 ranks among the high points of light-gun shooters on the PS2 and is a reminder of a time when arcades and home consoles still worked closely together on shared titles. The series continued even after leaving arcades, but this particular entry is still remembered as one of its most balanced and most playable.

Why play it: For a precisely tuned arcade shooter with a cover system — ideally with a light gun, since without one the game loses a bit of its charm, but it still ranks among the high points of the genre on PS2.
