A hypnotic shooter from Jeff Minter; a ship shoots down enemies crawling out of a tube.

TxK is a hypnotic arcade shooter in which the player controls a spider-like ship at the edge of an abstract geometric tube, shooting down everything that crawls up from within it. The basic principle is simple yet unforgiving: movement is confined to the rim of the track, shots are fired into the depth, and enemies must be destroyed before they reach the edge and start blocking movement. Each of the dozens of levels has a different track shape, a different mix of enemies, and a different color filter, so progressing feels like flying through an endlessly shifting tunnel. A bomb, a temporary speed boost, and a jump that briefly lifts you off the tube's surface are all available.

The game was created as a Vita exclusive and is clearly tailored to the handheld console. Short rounds, instant restarts, and a checkpoint system encourage playing in a few-minute bursts, while leaderboards, conversely, lead to long sessions chasing a better ranking. Technically it's an impressive demonstration of what modest hardware can handle: the screen fills with glowing vector shapes, particles, and light trails, yet it remains legible and runs perfectly smoothly. On the display of the original Vita, the result looks almost like a glowing neon toy you don't want to put down.

Sound is a crucial part of the experience. The electronic music intertwines with the sound effects so that shooting and explosions become part of the rhythm, and combined with headphones a state players describe as trance sets in. This exact combination of image and sound turns individual levels into something closer to a musical composition than a classic shooter, and it explains why players return to the game even after hundreds of playthroughs. Critics received the game very well and often called it one of the best reasons to own a Vita. The title's fate was later complicated by a legal dispute over its similarity to older games by the same creator, so TxK never received wide distribution on other platforms. That makes it all the more valuable right here, where it still ranks among the pinnacles of the console's entire arcade lineup.
